UNITED STATES AFRICAN COMMMAND AND NAVAL ASSESSMENT TEAM VISIT TO THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE AND REPUBLIC OF SIERRA LEONE ARMED FORCES

On Monday 29th January 2023, The USAFRICOM and Naval assessment team made a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Defence and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces. The purpose of the visit was to have an assessment of the full breath of RSLAF Naval capabilities including Maritime security, Human Resource Development and Naval Operational Laws. The team made this kind of visit to many West African Countries including Guinea. According to the head of the team, their official visit is in line with the priorities of His Excellency Ambassador Brian David Hunt which is to have the RSLAF Maritime Wing as a major partner in the relationship between USA and Sierra Leone. There is so much potential in the maritime of Sierra Leone which is capable of improving the livelihood of the fishermen and the citizens.

In his welcome remarks, the Acting Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Dauda Alpha emphasized that Sierra Leone is endowed with numerous maritime resources, which has contributed immensely to the economic development of Sierra Leone. However, he mentioned that series of challenges are been faced in terms of capability gap and security threats at sea. He continued that it was in that regard that the Chief of Defence Staff Lieutenant General PK Lavahun in his wisdom officially invited the USAFRICOM and NAVAL partners to carry out an assessment visit to the RSLAF Naval Wing to strengthen its capabilities.
The acting Chief of Defence Staff also mentioned that RSLAF had been grappling with the Tri-Service which the Defence Council is far ahead in terms of its planning for the Maritime Wing to stand alone. That is why the visit of the team is timely, because their intervention alone will capacitate the Maritime Wing. The team visited the Maritime Wing Headquarters at Murray Town for a detailed presentation.
