In his welcome remarks, the Acting Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Dauda Alpha emphasized that Sierra Leone is endowed with numerous maritime resources, which has contributed immensely to the economic development of Sierra Leone. However, he mentioned that series of challenges are been faced in terms of capability gap and security threats at sea.  He continued that it was in that regard that the Chief of Defence Staff Lieutenant General PK Lavahun in his wisdom officially invited the USAFRICOM and NAVAL partners to carry out an assessment visit to the RSLAF Naval Wing to strengthen its capabilities.

The acting Chief of Defence Staff also mentioned that RSLAF had been grappling with the Tri-Service which the Defence Council is far ahead in terms of its planning for the Maritime Wing to stand alone. That is why the visit of the team is timely, because their intervention alone will capacitate the Maritime Wing.
